MUD OR DUST is a nostalgic rewind in black and white of Rallycross through the formative 1967-71 British years.
Author Jeremy Walton initially drove in 1967 Autocross and subsequent pioneering Rallycross events at the North Yorkshire Croft track. Jeremy switched roles to become a reporter for Motoring News, covering the growth of Rallycross from an exploratory televised motor sport into professional Championship weekends.
Through the muddy worst of winter and uncharacteristic dusty days, Rallycross boomed at Cadwell Park (Lincolnshire) for commercial TV’s World of Sport cameras.
An even bigger draw became Lydden Hill (Kent), where the legendary Murray Walker and BBC coverage stimulated such public interest that up to 8 million viewers were claimed.
While Walton scribbled, Peter Osborne and Mike Black photographed the unfolding high octane action.
Presumed lost for many years, the 300+ black and white negatives they captured were recently rediscovered lurking in a dusty garage.
Although having suffered some damage, Osborne has restored many of these historic images and they form the basis of this book, along with samples of Walton's contemporary Motoring News reports.
Walton has also written 7000 words to accompany the 123 original photographs that bring to life the beginnings of this exciting, if somewhat mucky, branch of motorsport.
MUD OR DUST
Jeremy Walton & Peter Osborne
Paperback, 92 pages
“There’s a huge amount of motor sport history here - much of it previously untold - for such a pocket-money book.”
Classic Cars - August 2021
“Four-wheel-drive Capris, mud-caked Minis and a Cosworth powered Daf: this fond look back at the early days of rallycross is nothing if not eclectic. It is proudly personal, rather than wearing ‘official history’ pretensions and all the stronger for it.”
Motor Sport - July 2021
“Rallycross was always a very important and highly competitive branch of motor sport, and this book brings it to life with an excellent combination of enthusiastic text and top quality photographs. It’s an accurate and highly entertaining portrayal of weekend motor sport as it happened half a century ago. My advice is just to buy and enjoy a copy before they sell out!”
Wheels Alive - May 2021
“All great period pictures and information from guys who were there at the time.”
